This week we hold our Athletics Carnival so our students can enjoy the events and cheer on their teams.  It saddens us that we are unable to invite our parents and community to join us for this event but we know you support us from beyond our grounds.  To be able to facilitate the athletic events, staff are unable to be spread out to monitor COVID guidelines that must be adhered to with external visitors on the College. So this week we pray for all those that compete and all who support them:  

We pray for young athletes… 

Who through sports and competing, develop important values such as loyalty, perseverance, friendship and sharing.  

We pray for coaches…  

Who appreciate the gifts of all players and have respect for the game, who place players before winning and value sportsmanship.  

We pray for parents…  

Who love their children for who they are, not for how they perform. 

We pray for officials…  

Who inspire fair play and protect the integrity of the competition and the participating athletes.  

O God, we pray for all who participate in games and meets: 

May their hearts be open to see your presence in and through sports; 

may their minds remember the element of fun reflective of your Spirit; 

may their bodies reflect the gracefulness and wonder of your creation. 

Let all who compete be enriched by your presence on the course, in the gym, on the field, and on the track.

Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum - React 

Our students have been learning to recogniseif they are safe or unsafe in the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum. Our safety lessons will now be focusing on the second safety message: react. 

When children recognise that they are in an unsafe situation, we encourage them to think about what they could do to be safe again. They will have opportunities to think about ways to react using real-life scenarios. Our students will also learn that breaking the rules (e.g. saying no to an adult who is behaving inappropriately) is sometimes necessary so that they can become safe again.  

Please take the time to talk with your children about what they have been learning about safety and, in particular, the ways they could react if they are unsafe to make themselves safe again. Talking with your child about ways to stay safe will help them to develop life-long safety skills.

Primary Touch Football

The QLD Primary All Schools Touch Football Carnival scheduled for Cleveland in November has been cancelled for 2020.

QLD Touch Football Q Performance Academy

The College has begun the Q Academy to be held on Monday afternoons for six 6 weeks starting on 3 August. This program is run by QLD Touch and is a great opportunity to learn and refine some of the higher level of skills in Touch Football. The program will be for 12 -16-year-old students with the cost being $100 for the six sessions. Any students interested in being part of the program need to see Mr Lincoln.  There are still 4 sessions left and it is not too late to join.

Secondary Touch Football

The QLD All Schools Carnival held at Whites Hill in Brisbane is going ahead as planned. Numbers are still short in the Under 15 Boys team. Any boys interested in playing please see Mr Gillespie or Mr Lincoln ASAP. No spectators will be permitted at the fields due to Covid restrictions. Version 1 of the Draw has been released and passed onto students.

Congratulations to the Open Boys Tennis Team of Ben Forbes, Pat Kelly, Hayden Taylor and Harry Coman who competed at the Darling Downs Schools Cup in Toowoomba last Friday. Game results are listed below:

The Boys finished top of Pool A and will play in the Final against Toowoomba Grammar School this week.

Senior Netball

The Open Girls Netball team will next weekend attend an invitational carnival in Roma. Thanks to Miss Belonogoff for giving this opportunity to our girls. The team play games against St John’s Roma, Roma State College, Assumption College Warwick, St Joseph’s College Toowoomba, Marist College Emerald and St Augustine’s College Brisbane. Results will be in the next edition of the newsletter.

Darling Downs Netball

Four girls from Year 6 and 7 joined with the Bunya team to play at Highfields recently. They were Leila Boland, Monique Smith, Carla Nobbs and Heidi Reed. The team played well and our girls were competitive in tough competition. Congratulations to Carla Nobbs who was named as a shadow player for the Darling Downs Under 12 Girls Netball Team. 

Primary Schools Cup Netball

No further updates have been made available about the QLD Primary Schools Cup Netball Carnival at Ipswich on September 12-13. A decision will be made on the College participation at this carnival due to Covid 19 restrictions will be made next week.

Next week is the start of the first OLSCC STEM Challenge. You have four weeks to create your BRAINTASTIC project. It would be fantastic if you could explain your discoveries in a short video or digital presentation too!

The world is teeming with animal life. Even the most unexpected places can host a diverse range of creatures. As humans, we share our wonderful planet with many other animals. Taking the time to really look at another species can provide a window into the similarities and differences among living beings, and can help us to appreciate how we are all part of a single, gloriously complex ecological system.

The Schoolyard Safari unit for Year 1 is an ideal way to link science with literacy in the classroom. By observing the features of small animals, this leads to a better understanding of how their features help them survive in their habitats. Through investigations, students learn how animals move, feed, and protect themselves. They explore and compare the habitats of different animals.

In Mrs Dellit's Year 1 class, the students have been observing the habitat and features of snails and worms. Here's what some of the students thought about their wriggly, slimy friends.

MacKillop Day marked the celebration of the feast day of Mary MacKillop. She is Australia's first saint and House Icon of our College. Notably, this October is her 10th anniversary since being declared a saint in 2010. Mary MacKillop came from a large family and as the eldest, cared for her younger siblings. This began the start of her care and compassion through teaching that led her to 'not see a need without doing something about it'. In a similar way the students in the MacKillop House belong as members of a family, where the older students look out for the younger ones. We celebrated the day, by joining together as a House by wearing red and playing games on the oval organised by the Senior school students. An enjoyable time together was had by all.

We have recently had a number of students sign up for School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships which is quite amazing given the current climate with COVID-19 and the impact that has had on local business. For local employers to accept students and offer them opportunities to work and gain a qualification is fantastic. At McDonald's Dalby, we currently have four students completing a Certificate III in Retail with Ivy Tia. Mackenzie Wedrat signed up in March while Riley Woitowitz, Charlie Cooper and Dakota Wilson signed up in June. Anna Lilburne has commenced a Certificate III in Hospitality at Urban Paddock and Toby Harms has commenced a Certificate III in Agriculture with MelMark Trading. We've got more students completing sign ups with local businesses now so once again, we thank all these employers for providing opportunities to our students.

The Student Representative Council are running a fundraiser on Wednesday 26 August to raise money for those in our community doing it tough. Check out their flyer for the details.

Another group of Year 12 Religion students are practising their Catholic Social Teachings of care of their community by organising to collect essential school resources for children in Vanuatu. Check out their poster to see how you can contribute.

Let’s celebrate the cultural and religious diversity of our College! 

Our Year 12 Religion and Ethics group is aiming to live the Catholic Social Teachings by building relationships across the rich diversity of our College and wider community through our shared love of food and stories. In saying this, a cultural cookbook.  

Family recipes keep part of the legacy of our relatives and loved ones alive. As we record the thoughts, ideas and processes of our traditional family meals, we create an heirloom that will be handed down to our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. This respectful dialog of food passed down from one generation to another is a tool, a family tree of foods, a line that can be traced for decades into the past and the future.  

We would love to hear from any of our College families who would be happy to share their favourite cultural recipes for a College Cookbook. The purpose of the Cookbook is to highlight favourite foods from the diverse cultures which make up the rich fabric in our school and provide a platform for discussion of our diversity. Each week for the next four weeks we will be releasing tasting tempting recipes to lead into the final OLSCC cookbook. Here are the first two recipes! Enjoy!

The Children’s Book Council of Australia have revised their dates for Book Week 2020 to 17 – 23 October.

We will endeavor to hold our Dress-Up Parade on Thursday 22 October. More information to come closer to the date.

The work on a parish history, to be published late next year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of our parish church continues.

A big “thank you” to those people who have offered material so far about a range of topics: weddings, Children of Mary, Magellan Society, St Patrick’s Day, the Hibernian Society, YCW and so on.

I am still interested to get some information about Antioch and Cursillo groups. Going back a little further in time, the parish supported a number of sports teams: tennis and rugby league, certainly, and possibly others including bowls (or indoor bowls) and “women’s basketball” which I think probably means netball.

It has been difficult to find much information about the second St Joseph’s Church, the wooden structure near the corner of Jimbour and Bunya Sts that was used from 1886 to 1916 when it was demolished.

A visitor from Brisbane called into the Parish Office a few weeks ago, chasing some information to be included in his family research. As it turns out, his documented family history was able to fill in some gaps and remove some confusion that had existed about events in the 1860s!

I have quite a list of names of people to contact for their personal stories, and my apologies if you were expecting an immediate call from me. The original plan had been for some senior students from OLSCC to conduct and record the interviews, but COVID-19 has made a bit of a mess of that idea. 

We are still looking for photos and other details of sacramental celebrations (Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation) especially if those photos show off the fashions of the day or the exterior of the church. Any photos including the churches prior to 1921 would be fantastic!

Please label any photos you leave at the parish office with your name, and the names of anyone in the picture if you know them. A date, even if it’s approximate would be useful too.

2020 Early School Leavers survey

The Queensland Government is seeking the support of the school community for the annual survey of Year 10, 11 and 12 students who left school in 2019, before completing Year 12. This short, confidential survey collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The results of the survey help provide valuable information to improve services available to school leavers in the future.

Between August and September, these school leavers can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.

Medication Collection

Any medications that are kept at the College Office for your child's use at school must be collected and signed for by a parent after 3.00pm on Friday, 4 December.

2021 Medications

Any students who require medication to be administered whilst at school will need to bring their child's medication, administration for medication forms and 2021 Medical Action Plans (e.g. Asthma, Anaphylaxis, and Diabetes) in to the College Office by Monday, 18 January 2021.
