As we approach the end of term may we pause to consider all that has happened over the last 12 weeks since Term 1.  The catch cry of “in this together” rings in our ears as we look back on all we have accomplished in such a small amount of time.   

What an interesting time it is to reflect on and look forward from…

Learning Dispositions 

Teaching and learning are at the very heart of our faith. To be a “disciple” means to be a “learner.” Our Master is the ideal teacher, and the central task of his under-shepherds in the local church is teaching. God designed the church to be a community of lifelong learners under the earthly guidance of leaders who are teachers at heart. Therefore, the ongoing Christian life is inextricably linked to ongoing learning.  

• 
  The term 'learning dispositions', sometimes called 'habits of mind' or 'dispositions to learning', refer to the way in which learners engage in and relate to the learning process. Learning dispositions affect how students approach learning and therefore the outcomes of their learning.
• Different research identifies different dispositions but there is consensus about the importance of the learning dispositions furthering skills, engagement and deep understanding.
• Development of these dispositions is fundamental for students to develop an awareness of the way they learn and establish future-focused attitudes to learning, critical if they are to be able to become lifelong learners.

We have finally reached the mid-way point in what has been a year to remember. It is hard to believe that our Senior Years students have been truly tested in our College learning dispositions of being independent, persistent and motivated. Now, more than ever, Senior Years students were exposed to the qualities that it takes to experience academic success in the final years of their schooling journey. When we come back for Term 3, I encourage all students to springboard off their Term 2 growth as learners and challenge themselves to find opportunities to demonstrate the remaining learning dispositions (curious, creative, optimistic).

Year 12 External Exam Timetable Our Year 12 students will be the first cohort to sit external exams as part of the new Queensland Certificate of Education system. This is both exciting and daunting! The majority of subjects have an exam that caters for 25% of the student’s overall result. All Mathematics and Science subjects have exams that cover the year’s content and provides 50% of the student’s overall mark.

More information will be provided to Year 12 parents and students regarding our approach to learning and Year 12 Farewell activities that will occur in Term 4.

Assistant Principal Senior Years

What have I learned this term?

Indi – I am learning about decimals. I need columns for the ones, tenths and hundredths. 

Melody, Lucy, Bella – I am learning about the fruits of the holy spirit. They are humility, peace, joy, love, kindness, faithfulness, goodness, patience and self control.

Ashton – I have been learning to read more fluently so I’m not like a robot when I read.

Sam and Archie – We have been learning about facts and opinions. Facts are true and opinions are what people think about different things.

Sophia – I can make different amounts of money by using different coins and different combinations of coins.

Harriet and Isabelle – We found out that aboriginal people talk about five seasons instead of four.

Sadie and Will – We have learnt how to write an imaginative text. It can be not really real!

Mia – If a buddy needs help with anything, like a text, you can help them by working together.

Jackson and Uriah – We have been learning about 3D shapes – they are so cool! The corners have different names – they are called vertices.

Matty – I am asking questions. Jack is helping me by being a teacher.

Gracie – I have been learning how to hold a pencil properly.

Sophie and Darci – We have been making colour prayers.

Assistant Principal Early Years

In their work in Praxis this term, a number of year levels have undertaken work on the beautification and maintenance of the gardens around our College Campus. Praxis is an experiential faith-based service learning where students actively reflect and engage in the needs of our community. This practical application of living Christ’s values aims to result in connecting with unity and trust in our community with integrity, acceptance and goodwill of our responsibility and beneficial desire to serve.

This work links to one of the five Catholic Social Teachings at OLSCC, that being Stewardship of Creation (Care for our Common Home). Students and their Teachers identified a need within our College and acted accordingly by making positive improvements to our wonderful College environment. They were supported by the effective organisation of our Groundsmen, Mr Kavney and Mr Petersen, of which we are very grateful.

This year is the 5th anniversary of Pope Francis' encyclical, Laudato Si': On the Care for our Common Home. We are reminded of his important message that we are all called to recognise God's creation and respect this gift, taking responsibility of its care.

7A Praxis

This term in Praxis 7A have assisted the  Grounds Staff in the beautification of the College’s facilities. This has included weeding the newly planted trees on both ovals, cleaning the Long Jump Pit, along with decorating the outdoor staff area. This is still a work in progress, however, the area will be painted, tidied, greenspaces, and an additional outdoor seating space are on the agenda. Mrs Elizabeth Kuruilaca, Dave Kavney and Andrew Peterson have been great in helping our students throughout the projects. Last Wednesday the class concluding the term with a Prayer Gathering around the Long Jump Pit to take a traditional indoor occasion, outdoors. 

Year 11 Praxis

This week in Praxis, the Year 11s held their prayer gathering next to the gardens which they have been working on throughout this term.

Students planted cuttings in our gardens as an illustration of their care for our common home.

In our 8A Prayer service  we celebrated the stories of creation both from a Christian and Ingenious perspective.

Virtual Uni Open Days

Due to COVID-19, universities across the country have had to rethink the way they are providing students with the opportunity to discover and explore what their campus has to offer. The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) is running a survey to guage what people might like from a virtual open day. It asks questions like what sort of information you'd like from the 'tour' and when might be a suitable time to hold such an event.

I would encourage students to check out the website of any university they may be interested in to see what sort of virtual and online events they are holding. It may not be the same as visitng a particular campus in person but uni staff are working to ensure all students can still get a good feel for what they have on offer.

Inter House Athletics Carnival

The Physical Education Staff members and Administration team are currently working through plans to reschedule the College Athletics Carnival in Term 3, Week 5. The Carnival may not run in the same format as in previous years. More details will be available next term.

Primary Schools Cup Netball

The QLD Primary Schools Cup Netball Carnival will be held at Ipswich on September 12-13. Two teams have been nominated to attend this competition due to the number of girls interested in playing. Trials will be held after the holidays to select teams.

Bunya District Under 12 Netball Trials

Bunya District U12 Netball Trials will be held on Tuesday 21 July with the Darling Downs Trials scheduled for Tuesday 11 August. No Under 11 team will be selected this year.

Secondary Rugby League

The Darling Downs Rugby League Competitions will be rescheduled to Term 3. This will involve Under 13, Under 15 and Under 18 Teams with games being played in a round robin format. A draw for the season should be available early next term with games likely to be held on Wednesday afternoons.

Secondary Touch Football

The Dalby Touch Association Fixtures will be resuming in Week 2 of next term. The Under 15 Girls and Open Mixed Team will be competing in the respective Mixed and Ladies divisions. No decision has been made yet about the involvement of an Under 15 Boys Team. No verdict has been given at this stage about the QLD All Schools Carnival proceeding in October.

QLD Touch Football Q Performance Academy

The College has tentatively booked in the Q Academy to be held on Monday afternoons next term for six 6 weeks starting in August. This will be run by QLD Touch and will be a great opportunity to learn and refine some of the higher level of skills in Touch Football. This will be for 12 -16-year-old students. If the QLD All Schools Carnival is held this year we will run the program, if All Schools is cancelled the College will run the Q Academy Program in 2021.

Tennis

The College has entered a team in the 2020 Tennis Queensland Secondary School Team Tennis Competition.  This is scheduled to be held on Friday 7 August in Toowoomba. A trial to select a boys team to attend the competition will be held on Friday 17 July at 2.00pm.

Application to Learning - Effort  

Student Report Cards contain important information about your child’s application to their learning, that is, the effort they put in to be the best learner they can be.  In 2020 we have graded Application to Learning/Effort on a three-point scale.  Students’ Application to Learning is graded by their teacher for each Key Learning Area.     

The teacher uses evidence from your child’s engagement with their learning to give an overall standard level at one of the following three points: 

In Year 7-12 students are also graded on their Attitude to Learning in each Key learning Area by their teachers.  The independence with which the student displays our College Learning Dispositions is the criteria for this area of reporting.  This is also based on a three-point scale. In leu of this grading in Prep-Year 6 each class teacher writes a general comment about overall student learning.   

As mentioned in a previous newsletter, report cards for Semester 1, 2020 will be distributed in Week 2 of Term 3.  This change in timing for 2020 has allowed more in-class time for teachers to monitor student learning and their progress.  Report Cards will be available in hard copy only this Semester as we move to an updated Student Learning Management System they will no longer be uploaded to Parent Portal.  If you require a duplicate report to be issued please contact the College Administration in writing to make this request.
