Our names are Harriet and Lucy and we are in Year 2. We found lots of rubbish in and around the Year 2 gardens, the lunch shed, our playground and the big kid’sareas. Our friends helped us to clean it all up and put it in the bins. We need your help to keep our gardens and playgrounds clean and safe for everyone to enjoy. We would like you to join us in putting your own rubbish in the bin and if you see rubbish, picking it up and putting it in the bin too. We have made signs and put them all around the school to remind everyone how important it is to put rubbish in the bins. All around the school we now have special bins to help reduce the amount of rubbish going into landfill. If we can recycle lots of our drink bottles, crunchy plastics, containers, paper and cardboard, we can help save our planet. Please save all your food scraps in the special green bins so they can be fed to the chickens and the worms. We can then use the worm tea to help all our plants around the school grow healthily. Our world needs all of us to join together to keep the environment and our planet healthy for our future.

What a week!  As well as all the learning in our classes, so much has happened in our College this week celebrating the diversity of College Life.  On Monday, several classes and teachers were filmed using the interactive panels in our classrooms to showcase their use.  Our Year 3, 5, 7, and 9 students sat the NAPLAN tests.  We are super proud of how focused they were during the tests, trying their best and giving every question a go! On Wednesday our QISSN Netball team and Confraternity Football teams competed in a gala day refining their skills in preparation for their competition in July.  Our Under 13 and Under 15 Rugby League teams competed in Toowoomba on Wednesday afternoon.  All teams’ sportsmanship and team work was impressive.  Our staff are currently completing First Aid and CPR training in the evenings to stay up to date.  Today our Leadership Team is attending an inservice on coaching and mentoring to develop further their skills and build our College team.  Tomorrow our Preps to Under 11s compete in their Athletics Carnival.  A great week where the diversity of our students has really shone, as they had the opportunity to do things that they love and rise to the challenge of things they may find difficult.

Intergenerational/Intercultural Wisdom needed - more needed 

OLSCC are seeking interested persons to be a part of a PRAXIS initiative with Year 9 students, running from Term 2 until the end of the year. The project will involve developing relationships with students, sharing stories, interests and wisdom. Participants will then be interviewed over a series of sessions in order to create films about their life which they will be gifted at the end of the project. Sessions will take place at OLSCC on Wednesdays from 12:30pm – 1:30pm. We hope this project will assist students to learn from other members of the community who have experienced different generations and cultures and strengthen the bonds of our St Joseph’s Parish/OLSCC community. It’s been a busy time in the Early Years! Prep students welcomed new faces to the first of our Preppie for a Morning sessions, where lots of eager young children came along to experience first hand what a morning as an OLSCC student would be like. Our current Prep children were superb ambassadors for the College! The hospitality continued on Friday, as the Prep children welcomed Mums, Grandmas and Aunties to the annual Mother’s Day High Tea and Prayer celebration. This tradition has evolved over the years and it is always a treat to welcome back the Mums for their second, third or even fourth High Tea! It is wonderful to be able to take some time out to honour these special women in our lives.

The next Preppie for a Morning will be held on June 11. Please encourage anyone you know who may be interested in taking a look at our wonderful school to register their interest by phoning the College office. During Semester 2, we will once again offer the Pre-Prep Shooting Stars program on Monday and Thursday mornings, from 9:00am-11:00am. This will be a repeated session to cater for children at either end of the week, so that their current Kindergarten or Daycare program is not compromised. The focus on this program is to ensure a smooth transition into Prep in 2020. There has been significant interest in Prep enrolment, and as places are limited, families are encouraged to enrol before August 1. All enrolments will then be followed up on especially set aside Interview Enrolment Days on

Students across Years 1-4 are currently having their reading levels reviewed as part of our ongoing commitment to the Reading Improvement Strategy. In addition, Students in Year 3 have tackled NAPLAN tests this week, which they have approached with confidence and a sense of excitement! It has been wonderful to watch their smiling faces at both the beginning and end of each session. This is testament to the diligence both students and teachers have put in to ensuring we view regular assessment as simply another part of our learning journey.

Yesterday the College hosted St John’s Roma, Assumption College Warwick, St Joseph’s College Toowoomba and St Mary’s Kingaroy to participate in practice matches for the upcoming Confraternity Shield Carnivals in the July school holidays. The Rugby League Team were happy with their performances recording two convincing victories. The Netball girls improved in every game and will benefit from the match practice against high level opposition.

The garden beds outside the Science labs are now well established with several different winter crops grown from seeds donated by Scott Reed from Deacon Seeds. During one of their inspections of the crops, the Ag students discovered an aphid type insect invading some of the plants in particular, the millet. Last week we invited Scott to attend to advise the students on how to manage the infestation. Due to the small amount of plants and the strong chemicals required, it is unlikely that we will be able to spray the aphids but the lady beetles are so far doing some of the job towards controlling the problem. 

Scott was able to provide a wealth of knowledge on the aphids and how to manage them and also provided other interesting facts on the crops and the garden beds and how they are managed into the future. It was decided that as the crop's growth period comes to an end towards the last few weeks of the term, the students will clear out the garden beds and prepare them for some new season crops or vegetables by determining soil suitability and fertiliser needs. Up until then, the students will continue to monitor the growth of the crops in each bed which have each been applied with a different type of fertiliser.

We thank Scott for his time and knowledge and we acknowledge the support of Deacon Seeds in establishing the crop beds this season.

We had a fantastic morning last Thursday when our first Preppie for a Morning took place in the Prep rooms. We welcomed 25 children for the morning and as you can see from the images below, all our students, as well as our visitors enjoyed their activities which included morning prayer, marking the roll, inside learning and outside games as well as a lovely morning tea. The next Preppie for a Morning will take place on 11 June. If you would like to register your child, please contact the College office.

With assistance from the P & F, the Musical Group has been able to successfully apply for and receive a grant from Arrow Energy Brighter Futures Program. This funding will assist with the employment of past College student Hamish McGovern who will work with the students in the Musical cast and crew on stage direction and voice coaching as well as working with parent volunteers via stage make up and costuming workshops. Hamish is in his final year at University where he has learnt various methods of acting, improvisation, theatrical movement, safe vocal usage, voice care and Shakespearean text.

Our College has a number of families employed by Arrow Energy and we value Arrow's involvement in our local community as an employer of local people as well as the Brighter Futures Program which supports local community projects and events.

VEGETABLE FRITTATA

2 medium potatoes (400g), peeled, cut into 1cm slices

1 medium kumara(400g), peeled, cut into 1cm slices

10 eggs

1/2 cup (125ml) cream

1 cup (80g) grated parmesan cheese

1/2 cup (60g) grated cheddar cheese

50g baby spinach

2 tablespoons thinly sliced fresh basil

Preheat oven to 160 degrees fan forced.  Grease and line 19cm deep square cake tin.

Boil, steam or microwave potato and kumara separately until just tender.

Whisk eggs until well combined then add cheese.

Layer potato slices into cake tin, top with spinach then layer kumara slices, then basil.  Carefully pour egg mixture over vegetables.

Bake covered for 45 minutes.  Allow to rest for 5 minutes before removing from tin and slice into wedges.
