Our Lady of the Southern Cross Day Celebrations on Monday
I eagerly look forward to catching up with many of you and enjoying the celebration of the feast day of Our Lady of the Southern Cross, Mary – Mother of Jesus. As the patron saint of our Diocese, and the namesake of our College, this marks an important day for our community. Please join with us on Monday commencing with Prayer Celebration at 12:30pm, followed by activities on the Oval!
Beyond the religious significance of the day, as outlined later in the newsletter, it is important that we also take this opportunity to be grateful for what God has graced us with at our wonderful College. I have been struck with pride recently when recognising the College learning environments, teachers, timetables, facilities and fee structures that we have in place. We have the luxury of a remarkably stable teaching team at our College, meaning that our students are fortunate enough to have the same teacher throughout an entire year in most subjects. This isn’t only great for academic outcomes, its also wonderful for quality learning relationships to be built between students and teachers. In Michael Fullan’s new book The Principal 2.0, he speaks of the “new purposes for education: well-being and learning with respect to individual, community, and societal development. Individual academic development occurs within this framework but does not dominate as it has for the past two deacades. Belongingness is a key factor.” This is the true value of a College like ours. We are big enough to provide significant opportunities for students, yet small enough for every child to be known and valued for the important role they play in the College community. They belong.
I am also remarkably proud of the ongoing work of teachers in classrooms, and the staff that support them. This week, Mrs Bennie, Mrs Pevy and Education Officer, Mrs Cath Kimmorley, walked through the whole College identifying teacher practice that is in alignment with the Diocesan Approach to Reading, and Visible Learning. The quality of our teacher practice assures the standard of teaching and learning that happens in the classrooms at OLSCC is high, and also provides us insight into our next steps to ensure our teachers are always providing an excellent education to the students here. This includes a technology platform that is used remarkably well, not because of the product, rather, due to the input and expertise of teachers using the software to maximise impact for students. The teaching and learning in classrooms, and the technology that supports this, are still at the cutting edge at OLSCC.
Everyone who doesn’t teach a class at OLSCC, including me, has one core job to do and that is to allow teachers to do their best work in the classroom. Our support staff, including grounds, cleaners, admin, classroom school officers, careers team and leadership team are all here to ensure that teachers can do their best work in and out of the classroom. What’s great about our support staff is they do their work through our Catholic lens – serving others selflessly. We are blessed with an amazing support staff at OLSCC, in fact, if you ask some kids who their favourite staff member is, you may be surprised by the answer. I definitely know that Sonny Carmichael and Mr Chiverton have a lot to talk about every time they catch up!
Most importantly, we know and value who we are as a community. We consistently perform very well academically, socially, in sport, and in the standard of the great humans that we turn out into the world. We do so at a price point that enables families, who value what we provide, to access an education here. We also have a vast amount of space for our students to run and play, some great facilities like the Ag Paddock, our Library, INTAD, our great ovals, a couple of extra grassed areas about to be planted/turfed, and a beautiful community that supports everything we do. I am very proud of the wonderful College we have here at OLSCC, the amazing staff that commit themselves to growing great people, the students who turn up and do their best whenever they can, and the community of love and support that surrounds us all. Have a wonderful weekend and I hope to see many of you on Monday afternoon.
Dalby Speech and Drama Eisteddfod Results
There were some wonderful performances and achievements at the Speech and Drama Eisteddfod earlier this month. On assembly last week, 3W were presented with their trophy for ‘Best Verse Speaking Choir’, a great result for the class. Of special note, Nadine Garside won the Senior Secondary Speech and Drama Championship which was in addition to the Vocal Championship earlier in the year and was the first quinella of these trophies for any Dalby competitor in quite some time. There were plenty of other champions as well. Please check out Ms Creeley’s newsletter item for more details.
At OLSCC, we strive to grow great people, great people that become learners of influence and impact. I encourage students of all ages to engage in the aforementioned areas of our College to develop the skills they need to have influence and impact in the world in which they live!

As a Senior Leadership Team we are reading a book together to inspire our leadership, called ‘Legacy’ by James Kerr. This is the third time I’ve read this book in its entirety with a group. Each time I read it I take away a new saying or message that resonates with me. This week’s chapter is all about ‘keeping a blue head’ to control your attention. It is a timely chapter to read as we start to look towards the end of term and the holidays which are nearly here but as we finish off all that we have been working on this term. There is such satisfaction is finishing off tasks whether for our students it’s the assessment they have been drafting or the mock exam they sit in preparation for next term or for our staff the marking of these. In this chapter it reminds us that controlling our attention is about bringing ourselves back into the present (pg 118). I love this notion, as we know it is important but sometimes need reminding. Enjoy the now of the last few weeks. The holidays will come that is inevitable but until then, enjoy the now and be present.
LEARNING DISCUSSIONS TERM 3
Thank you to our staff and families who held Learning Discussions last week. As we are reviewing our reporting this year, if you have any feedback on these discussions we would love to hear it via the form below.
Planning for Learning Discussions is multi-faceted. We consider the learner, where are they at in their learning, is this a good time to give feedback so families can support their learning? We understand that families are busy units, so we consider how can we structure these opportunities to get the best engagement without adding additional pressures to family life? When do we host these so that teachers time is utilised and in a technological age how can we create online opportunities for those unable to come in person? We also acknowledge that we will never be able to suit the needs of every family in our College and that the best way to work with your child's teacher/s to support their learning is through ongoing communication throughout the year. This was highlighted strongly through parent feedback at the end of Semester 1.
Learning Discussions Term 3 Feedback
Your feedback and voice are valuable in our year of review. You may have not seen immediate change from your Term 2 feedback but it is important to note that it all being considered in our review process as we make plans for 2025.
CLASS CONSIDERATION FOR 2025
Creating class lists and allocating students to classes each year is an important task for our College staff. On our College website you will find a page dedicated to the process we follow when creating classes. I encourage all parents to read this information and the FAQ sections to assist parents to understand this process and to talk to your children about their new classes. This page is called Class Allocation and can be found under ‘Enrolment & Back to School’.
COLLEGE EVENTS
We love it when families join us for College events. Our next big College Event is Our Lady of the Southern Cross Day. On this day we join as a whole College for our prayer celebration at 12:30pm in the MPC. Our 2025 Prefects will be announced at this prayer celebration, followed by an afternoon of whole college athletic events on the Main Oval. These events include All Age Relay, the Tresillian and Gillespie Gifts. This is a great afternoon to join us to celebrate the magic that is our Prep – Year 12 College community.
Grandparents are so special, and we celebrate them as a College on Grandparent’s Day. This year, Grandparent’s Day will be held on Friday 13 September. Official activities will commence at 9:30am with our prayer celebration in the MPC, grandparents are welcome to mingle after drop off from 8:30am for a casual cuppa in the Middle Years Plaza. After prayer, grandparents will head to classroom visits to see the exciting ways and concepts our students have been learning in 2024.
If you are new to our College family in 2024 you may not be aware of another big occasion we have in Term 4, our College Awards of Excellence Ceremony. Held during the Year 12’s last days here at the College, it celebrates and acknowledges excellence in all four domains of our College; Academia, Spirituality, Sport and Arts. Awards are presented to students in all year levels as we celebrate our rich College life. At the conclusion of the Awards, we farewell our Year 12 students as a P-12 community and they exit and ring the journey bell. This ceremony will be on 13 November beginning at 9:15am. Parents will be notified via Parent Portal at the commencement of Term 4 if your child is receiving an award. Teachers have already commenced their work on Award nomination and over the coming weeks I will feature the criteria for our Awards in our newsletter.
GRANDPARENT’S DAY – the finer details
Grandparents can be defined in many ways; a parent of one’s father or mother, they are also extended family or even dear family friends who fill the role of mentor and loved one in our lives. We extend an invitation for all Grandparents of our College students (Prep to Year 12) to join us on our annual Grandparent’s Day, Friday 13 September.
The day will flow:

So we can arrange seating we ask all grandparents to RSVP to this event by Monday 9 September using the QR Code below or this link
PUPIL FREE DAY THIS FRIDAY
This Friday is our last Pupil Free day of the year. Below is information that has been repeated in last few newsletters about they WHY of Pupil Free Days and dates for 2025.
WHY DO WE HAVE PUPIL-FREE DAYS?
Are you curious why we have Pupil-Free Days? These days are extremely important for our staff to gather and to be lifelong learners themselves. The Toowoomba Catholic Schools office designates each year which days these will be taken on and over the course of year we have 10 Pupil free days allocated. Five of these occur outside of the school terms either in the week before students start in Term 1 or after school in the form of extended professional learning sessions until 7:30pm. The other five occur during the school term, one at the commencement of Term 1, Term 2 and Term 3, one aligned to Catholic Education Week and the other a Friday usually in late August or early September. On these days the staff collaborate and engage in professional learning aligned to directions set by Toowoomba Catholic School Office as well as annual goals and priorities as set by the College each year. Some of these occur here at the College whilst others occur at different locations like last Friday’s Bishops Inservice Day which was held at St Mary’s College Toowoomba. The dates for Pupil-Free Days for 2025 are:
Week 0 – 21 January – 24 January (before students commence)
Tuesday 28 January
Tuesday 22 April
Monday 14 July
Friday 1 August
Friday 5 September
DATE CLAIMERS – Term 3 and beyond

Father’s Day Sunday 1st September 2024
Whether you refer to him as dad, daddy, or father, whether by blood or by choice, dedicating a day to celebrate the influential and admirable men who have shaped our lives is a cherished tradition.
Father's Day provides us with an opportunity to express our gratitude for the love, guidance, and sacrifices our fathers and father-figures have made for us. For many, the journey into fatherhood is transformative, and on this special day, it's essential to honour and appreciate the significant role fathers play in our lives.
We recognise that for some, Father's Day may evoke mixed emotions or feelings of loss. To those who find this day challenging, our thoughts and prayers are with you as you navigate this time, and we hope you can find comfort in these Father's Day verses.
Proverbs 14:26
"Whoever fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge."
This verse reminds us that when fathers lead their families with reverence for the Lord, they provide a safe haven for their children, nurturing them with love and security.
Proverbs 23:24
"The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him."
Fathers take great pride in seeing their children grow in wisdom and righteousness. This verse highlights the joy that comes from witnessing the positive growth and character development of their offspring.
Psalm 103:13
"As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him."
Just as earthly fathers show compassion and care for their children, our Heavenly Father demonstrates boundless love and mercy towards those who honour Him. This Father’s Day, be sure to reflect on how your father has been a reflection of Christ in your life and continue to pray for God’s presence to be revealed to you through your father on earth.
Loving Father, You trusted your Son Jesus, the child of Mary, to the care of Joseph, an earthly father.
Bless all fathers As they care for their families.
Give them strength and wisdom, tenderness and patience.
Support them in the work they have to do, protecting those who look to them, as we look to you for love and salvation.
We ask this through Jesus Christ,
Amen

Year 2 HASS
Year 2 was fortunate to have Ziggy and Ace visit this week to share their culture with us. We learnt the meaning behind many of the parts of a traditional aboriginal welcome dance, the different roles people have in making the music and the actions they perform. Lots of fun was had trying to learn the dance. Mr Anderton even joined in with us! The boys answered lots of questions about the symbols they paint on their bodies for the dance when they perform at our College events too. Ziggy and Ace shared their family story and adventures they’ve had reconnecting with their land. We then spent time learning about didgeridoos and clap sticks, how they are made, the traditions about who plays them, when and even how! Lots of excitement followed when we were able to paint our own digeridoos and clap sticks using symbols to tell a story. Thankyou Ziggy and Ace for a wonderful afternoon of learning!
Ms Joyce & Miss Price
Year 2 Teachers
This week, we hosted the last of the 2024 ICAS Tests for the students and families who opted to participate in the process. The results for these tests are released via the portal approximately two weeks after the test window has closed. The Writing test is the exception. The results for this test can take up to 6 weeks. Certificates awards for students are created by the official administrators. Once completed, they will distribute them to the College, and we will pass on to the students once they arrive. Well done to all the students who participated.
Gold Rush at Dalby!
Year 5 students struck it rich on Thursday when they discovered gold in the Early Years playground! Learning about the Eureka Gold Rush period, the students dressed up, adopted characters, and took their learning outside for part of Thursday. They even found a gold “expert” they named Professor Gerald Goldimeanor and promptly interviewed him as part of their assessment task.
It was great to see students engaging with their learning in different ways and having a lot of fun at the same time. Well done to the teachers and staff who helped make this happen for the students.
Book Week
We love Book Week. We love a dress up. It was great to see students getting involved in the spirit of the day last Wednesday. Year 7s even completed their Praxis Project by visiting the Containers for Change depot in full costume, much to the delight of the workers in the centre. We had some strange looks from passing cars as we moved between the campus and the depot, but it was pleasing to hear a member of the public correctly identify Holes as the book the students used as their costume inspiration.
Weather
The past week has seen the weather shift to very much announce the arrival of spring time. While it has not been hot (we would certainly love days of 30-32 degrees in the middle of summer) it has been above the August average. This serves as a reminder that students need to remain hydrated while here at school and the black jacket that the students love to wear through winter now needs to find its home in the cupboard.
Staying adequately hydrated at school will not only avoid students feeling the effects of those pesky dehydration headaches, but it also helps be better for learning during the day. Check out the other health benefits of sufficient hydration.
UniSQ Discovery Day
Year 7 and Year 8 students traveled to the University of Southern Queensland on Tuesday in Week 7 to explore career pathways. About 500 students were in attendance, from a range of schools across the region and it was a great way for our students to see the campus, engage in some activities, but start to think about their own interests and potential pathways for the future. Thank you to Mr Garside and Mrs Boland for helping plan the day.
Kind regards,
Craig Cullen
Assistant Principal Middle Years
5/6 and 7/8 QAMT Maths Quiz
On Tuesday 20th August and Wednesday 21st August our College sent three 5/6 and three 7/8 teams to the annual Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers Quiz. These students completed Round 1 of the competition at Chinchilla State High School and worked their way through 5 rounds of problem-solving Maths. Each round offered specific types of Maths questions (eg. Estimation, General Knowledge), and the students had to work together to find a solution. Points were accumulated over the 5 rounds and all the OLSCC teams finished in great position and proudly represented our College. All teams will move on to Round 2 in early Term 4 to see if we have a shot at the State Final. A big thank you to Mrs Jodie Biggar, Mrs Carey Twidale, Mrs Karlie Burton and Ms Sally-Anne Dellit for supporting and transporting our students on the day.
Year 5/6 - Matilda Kahler, Chrel Doria, Isla Blair, Jean Timms, Koby Ashurst, Xavier Skerman, Terrence Liang, Will Burton and Jo Heintze
Year 7/8 - Arrt Blinco, Lochie McNaughton, Tom Clarke, Bobby Machin, Cody Bryant, Ashton Crothers, Lainey Geiger, Indiana Wilson and Bella Bonnin.
6A HASS
On Monday 26th August, 6A connected live with a parliamentary expert through the Parliamentary Education Office's digital programs. Parliamentary Insider was a 50-minute program and explored the function and significance of Australia's democratic system of government. During this program we were investigating:
- how laws are made through Parliament
- the responsibilities of representatives
- the formation of government
- how government is kept accountable
This program was a great resource that helped us deepen our learning in our Term 3 HASS unit on Making our Nation.
Melinda Crow
Middle Years Teacher
As we welcome the arrival of spring next week, we find ourselves nearing the end of another term. This is a time to reflect on our achievements, celebrate our successes, and prepare for the challenges ahead.
With many exciting events still to come, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of all our students this term. Your commitment to your studies, extracurricular activities, and personal growth is truly commendable. Remember, it’s not just about the final result; the journey and the growth along the way are what truly matter.
As we conclude this term, we encourage all students to make the most of the remaining days. Complete your assignments, study for your exams, and seek help if needed. Your teachers are here to guide you and ensure you have the resources you need to succeed.
Year 12 Retreat
For our Year 12 students, this term marks a significant milestone in your high school journey. You are about to embark on your final retreat, a time for reflection, bonding, and rejuvenation before the final push towards external exams. This retreat is an opportunity to create lasting memories with your group and to reflect on your personal journey over the years.
As you head off to your retreat, take this time to recharge, soak in the beauty of nature, and connect with your peers. Cherish these moments, as they are a crucial part of your high school experience.
Subject Selections for Year 11, 2025: A Crucial Step Towards Success in Senior School
The time is drawing near for Year 10 students to make their subject selections for Year 11, 2025. This decision marks a significant step towards your future academic and career pathways. Choosing the right subjects is not only about pursuing your interests but also about laying a strong foundation for success in senior school and beyond. The subjects you select now will shape your learning journey, so we encourage everyone to explore their options, seek guidance from teachers and counsellors, and make informed choices that align with their goals and aspirations. We're here to support you every step of the way as you embark on this important journey towards academic excellence and personal growth.
These are some ideas that may help support you and your student:
- KNOW YOUR MATERIAL The more confident you are about the topic(s) in your test, the less stress you will feel come exam time. Make sure you stay on top of your school work and homework throughout the term. Follow up with your teacher, or another subject matter expert, if there are things you don’t understand, well before the exams. Trying to understand new concepts the night before a test is very stressful.
- PRACTISE Make sure you do practise papers if they are available, or practise questions. This might include multiple choice, short answer or essay style questions. Always study in the way you will be tested. Work out a plan of action so you know how long you are going to allocate to each question type, what question types you will start with and what you will do if you come across things you aren’t sure about. Learn more in the Active Studying unit.
- FUEL YOUR BODY AND YOUR MIND In the days leading up to an exam make sure you get enough sleep. Being tired makes it harder to concentrate and remember. Fuel your body and mind by eating well and drinking plenty of water. Learn more about this in the Lifestyle and Balance unit.
- MANAGE THE PHYSICAL SIGNS OF STRESS Familiarise yourself with how your body feels when you are stressed. Do you get headaches? Tension in your neck or shoulders? Does your heart race faster? What happens to your breathing? Whenever you feel these effects, quickly start some relaxation exercises. A good one to try during an exam is to breathe in deeply for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds and breathe out for 8 seconds. Do this a few times to calm yourself down and allow yourself to refocus. Learn more about this in the Managing Stress unit.
- BE PREPARED ON THE DAY Make sure you have packed or prepared everything you need for the test the night before. Have a plan for how you are going to get to school on time - including a back-up plan if necessary. Eat a nutritious breakfast and make sure you are hydrated. Learn more about this in the Test-Taking Techniques unit.
- VISUALISE Use visualisation techniques to help reduce your stress on the day. Every day in the weeks prior to the exam, last thing at night and first thing in the morning, visualise yourself calmly walking into the exam room, preparing your equipment, reviewing and completing your exam paper and feeling good about how you did. Learn more about this in the Managing Stress unit.
- INVOLVE YOUR PARENTS IN YOUR SCHOOLWORK Throughout the term talk to your parents about what you are studying. Show them your bookwork and homework. The more your parents understand about what you are doing and how you are going along the way, the better they are able to manage their expectations. They may also be able to help you study by testing you on what you are learning.
- TALK TO YOUR PARENTS ABOUT REALISTIC GOALS Keep talking to your parents about what you want to achieve, in individual subjects, at school overall and in other aspects of your life. Focus more on the learning and developing skills instead of just marks. Involve them in helping you to identify where to concentrate the most effort to achieve your goals. Learn more about this in the Goal Setting unit.
- UNDERSTAND EXPECTATIONS Many students feel like they are not meeting their parents’ expectations. Often this is a result of poor communication about expectations by both parties. Assessment and reporting systems also change over time and are different in different schools and systems. Making sure your parents really understand what your report means may help them to understand what you are actually achieving. Your school can assist you to explain these to your parents if need be and most schools provide booklets of explanation. Often students are achieving, but reporting structures may not clearly represent this to parents.
- ASK FOR HELP The most important way to deal with stress is by talking to people and asking for help. Don’t try and go it alone. Your school, teachers, parents and friends are your support structure so keep lines of communication open (that means talk to them!) and let everyone know how you are feeling and what help you need.
Preparation for Term 4.
While the Year 12s enjoy their retreat, the rest of the College will be gearing up for Term 4. It's a term filled with opportunities for success. Use your holidays wisely to set goals, plan your approach, and seek support if needed. Whether you are aiming for academic excellence, exploring new hobbies, or contributing to our College community, Term 4 is a chance to shine brightly.

We want to do a BIG shout out and thank you to all of our wonderful sponsors, without their support, days like these wouldn't be possible.
Thanks to our FOTF sponsor Andersens Dalby, we welcome our 3 FOTF judges who will be joining us for the afternoon.
Lastly, we have had some questions from the school community around purchasing tickets.
We hope to see you all at the 2024 Saints Race day supporting our annual fundraising event. It will be a spectacular day out track side!
As always, if you have any questions or would like to donate items for our auction or raffle prizes, please email the FACE team DalbyFACE@twb.catholic.edu.au
