Liturgical Reception and Installation of Most Reverend Ken Howell as the seventh Bishop of Toowoomba
This wonderful celebration will take place on Tuesday 11 July at 11:00am in St Patrick’s Cathedral in Toowoomba and is only the seventh time the event has occurred in our Diocese. A small delegation of students will be invited to attend the service with me, and our community and Parish members are also welcome and invited to attend. It is important to note that very few seats will be allocated for any particular groups, including schools, and so it is important that those attending arrive early to secure a seat in either the Cathedral or the Cathedral Centre. The event will also be livestreamed in the same manner as regular services. This is most readily available on Facebook under the “Catholic Diocese of Toowoomba” page or via the Diocesan Website: www.twb.catholic.org.au
School Renewal and Improvement Report
We have recently received the School Renewal and Improvement Report that was informed by the Quadrennial School Review that took place in Week 6 of Term 2. This review takes place every four years as a part of the process in which the College collaboratively develops the Strategic Plan for the next 4 years. Ms Sharon Collins began the process of consultation and collaboration in this process through engaging stakeholders in various forms of feedback to begin drafting the OLSCC Strategic Plan for 2024-2027. The School Renewal and Improvement Report is also being taken into consideration and mapped against key priorities for the next 4 years, and I greatly look forward to launching the strategic plan at the start of the 2024 school year. I see this strategic plan as crucial to the future of the College as it not only builds the College’s capability to deliver an even better education to our students, it also culminates in the celebration of 150 years of Catholic Education in the community.
The complete and unredacted School Improvement and Renewal Report is attached for your perusal including findings and improvement strategies for the future.
I would like to sincerely thank all members of the staff, student body and community who took the opportunity to provide feedback to the review panel for the formation of this report. Without your valuable input a complete picture cannot be determined, and an accurate direction cannot be ascertained. Your contribution is highly valued!
Toowoomba Catholic Schools Arts Fest: Belief in the Arts
The inaugural Arts Fest begins on Monday, for 27 of our students who are attending next week. It is an opportunity for our students to perform in front of an audience and enjoy the fun and excitement of learning new skills and collaborating with students from other schools within our Diocese. Educating the whole child is an important factor in our work as educators. We not only teach the skills needed to be motivated, confident and persistent learners but also how to be resilient when things don’t go as we had planned or expected. As we approach the end of Semester 1, I encourage all to have an outlook of optimism and resilience as we delve into our new units of work and finish our last week of school. A well-earned break is almost upon us all, but we need to continue to work until then.
Sentral For Parents
Sentral for Parents is an important App for Parents to have downloaded and to be able to access. Using this App is the easiest way to update phone numbers and addresses, notify the College of absences, check attendance data for your child and to access other important notes. You will also find a number of links in the App that will take you Flexischools for Tuckshop, CANVAS and our College website. Email reminders have been sent to all families who have not activated their parent portal access keys. If you are unable to access the portal due to forgotten log in details these can be reset through the Sentral for Parents App.
Semester Two Report Cards
As we approach the end of Semester 1, Report Cards are being finalised by teachers and the College. The entry of results and the editing of report cards for all students across our College is a mammoth task and I thank our staff for the hours they dedicate to this important work. Semester 1 Report Cards will be released on Wednesday of Week 10 in both digital and hard copy forms. Digital reports can be accessed and downloaded from Sentral for Parents.
Assistance Needed @ St Joseph’s
St Joseph’s Catholic Parish relies on volunteers to ensure our Parish runs smoothly. The July to December Roster is currently being prepared. If you would like to help, we encourage you to contact the Parish office dalbyparish@twb.catholic.edu.au to express your interest.
A commitment to this roster is both a great way to help out and support our parish but also to achieve your own goals for Leadership Passport esp. public speaking element.

This week we celebrate Kindness Week. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, to be kind means to have a sympathetic or helpful nature. It also indicates gentleness, compassion and affection. It’s a genuine reflection of the heart.
We are surrounded by God’s kindness every day. Evidence of his kindness shows in our lives, in the Bible and in his character. Jesus set the ultimate example of kindness with his life. Following his example can be difficult, but God calls and equips believers to be kind. When we understand how important kindness is to God, we choose to interact with kindness with the world.
Kindness is one of the ways you can tell from a person’s life if they are a follower of Christ. There are so many examples of kindness in the Bible, but one that reflects our students today can be found in Galatians, 22 But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 humility, and self-control. There is no law against such things as these. Galatians 5:22-23
Lord of unfailing love, my life is a living testimony to Your kindness and forgiveness.
You redeemed me from an eternity separated from You when I did not deserve it.
How then can I reflect unkindness toward anyone?
Lord do not let it be so in my life. Kindness is the instrument of my Holy God, and I want to become a skilled user.
Grant me knowledge, discernment, and precision to use kindness to cut out hatred, racism, indifference, inequality, and all the other afflictions that run rampant in humanity.
Use me, Lord, to lead with Your kindness and to be Your catalyst for change.

Winning
We all love to win, or when we see people we know win, we all love to celebrate the best of results. We always aim high; that gives you a great launching pad.
The problem with focussing on the win or the result is that you can take your eye off the hard work and the next step and the process of putting in place all the training you have done.
This is why we talk so much about progress. Are we getting better, stronger, thinking more clearly, and predicting better results?
I am really encouraged by all of our students who have shown progress and growth over the term – that is what learning is all about.
As we head into holidays it is important that students disconnect and have a break, celebrate their success, then reset ready to win again in semester 2.
I wish everyone a refreshing and enjoyable break.
Report Cards
Report cards will be published shortly to our community. As parents and carers, could you please consider asking your child to reflect on their progress by discussing with you where they think they are in their learning. Students should be able to provide feedback on where they are with their academic progress on a 5-point scale (A to E), their attitude and their application to learning.

QCAA external assessment timetable 2023
The external assessment timetable is designed to:
- minimise clashes for students across the examination period. Where there is a clash within a morning or afternoon session, students will be allocated to the alternative session on the same day
- ensure most students sit no more than two external assessments on one day
- provide sufficient breaks between external assessments for popular courses and frequently combined courses
- enable all external assessments to be marked in time for students to receive their final Year 12 results.
Uniform Term 2
A gentle reminder that going into Term 3 the expectations regarding the uniform will not change. We continue to emphasise with the students that the uniform is important in setting the tone for the College community. A student wearing the uniform correctly shows that they have pride in themselves and pride in the community they belong to. A school uniform reduces incidents of bullying and the stress of peer pressure as all students are the same. Uniforms do not distinguish between socio-economic backgrounds like free dress does.
The uniform also helps the students focus on their job at hand. They are students not fashion statements while at school. Wearing their uniform helps the student “switch on” to student mode and it provides the students with a reminder of what the expectations of the College are and how they are supposed to behave and apply themselves to their learning.
A student wearing their uniform well in public shows they are proud of being a part of this community. When a member of the wider community sees a student who is proud of where they come from, it often reflects back to the student in the way the member of the community interacts with them and their opinion of the school.
Year 11 Leadership camp
Last week, our Year 11 students began their leadership journey by participating in their leadership camp. The students demonstrated an outstanding attitude, engaging with each other through a variety of different sessions. The group focused on servant leaders' strengths and characteristics while developing skills to work as a team to achieve common goals. The year 11 group showed true potential as a strong leadership group, and we are excited to continue this journey with them over the next 18 months.
Last week we also celebrated the efforts of our Year 12 group marking the 100 days left point of their secondary education. With unit 3 assessment complete, students are now surging towards external exams and completion of unit 4 work.

From Phily, Charlotte and Abby
This year Phily, Charlotte and Abby, as well as many other students across a range of courses, have been working hard at TAFE Dalby completing their Certificate 2 in Salon Assistance. Throughout the year we have been attending one day a week to our simulated salon, learning all things hair. We learn how to braid, shampoo, blow-dry, apply treatments and colour, trim, and style hair as well as learn workplace health and safety, recommending products to clients and maintaining tools and equipment. We really enjoy attending TAFE, meeting other students from around the district and keeping our hands busy through heaps of practical work. We are the first students to complete this course in Dalby and highly recommend it to any future students from grades 10-12 who are interested in hairdressing.
Aside from this, last week the QISSN netball team played against Saint Joseph’s College Toowoomba and unfortunately came home with a close loss of 38-35. The girls really enjoyed this game and have worked hard as a team to work together both on and off the court. Both the Netball and Rugby League Confro teams are packing their excitement to leave for Brisbane on the 25 June. They are getting keen to show the comp their skills and make Our Lady proud. We wish the best to the students playing and we will be cheering you on from home.
Athletics Carnival is getting close, and the seniors are ready to knock the ball out of the course coming in golf theme on Friday. Events will be spread across Thursday and Friday, house games to finish off the carnival. We hope to see all students dressed to impress in their house colours, ready to put in their best effort to see who will win the house cup.
Last Wednesday, students from Year 9 and 10 Business Studies had the opportunity to attend the first Young Entrepreneur’s Summit in Dalby, supported by Western Downs Regional Council. It was an amazing day where students were able to interact with like-minded people from across the state. Students heard from various entrepreneurs such as Duku Fore, a published author and United Nations delegate who spoke to the students about facing challenges and persevering to succeed. They also heard from several local entrepreneurs operating in various industries. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and get an idea of what it is to be successful in business. Students then pitched their innovative ideas to solve the problems facing society. They heared many great ideas from their peers such as a mental health robot and recreational spaces targeted at young people. Overall, the day was an enjoyable experience that gave students insight into the world of business and what it is to be an entrepreneur.

ICAS Competitions
This year, the College would like to offer our students an opportunity to participate in a range of International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) competitions. ICAS is an independent, skills-based assessment program which recognises and rewards student achievement. It is unique, being the most comprehensive generally available suite of academic assessments for primary and secondary school students. These competitions provide a wonderful opportunity for students to test themselves on a national scale.
Participation in one or more of the completions is optional. Families can even choose which competitions they would like to register their child in. The competition dates vary, however, all will be completed in the month of August. Below is a guide as to date ranges for each test, along with pricing information.

Leadership Passport – Update
This term we saw our first student graduate from Level 1 of the Leadership Passport and begin her journey in Level 2.
Well done, Kaity Harms. You may recall Kaity organising a series of netball games at lunch times for students as part of a mental health awareness focus – the post below was uploaded towards the end of May.
Kaity may be the first student moving onto the next level, but I am pleased to report that she has some Middle Years students closely behind her and they are expected to graduate from Level 1 shortly.
In other good news, we now have 71 students from Year 3 through to Year 9 who have volunteered to begin their leadership development journey. Well done to those students!
The Leadership Passport is a voluntary process that aims to develop a series of specific skills commonly called upon for student leaders. For example, showing initiative, public speaking, and commitment to the College are just three areas that the passport model works on. We know that being a good leader takes time, effort, and lots of practice.

Responsible Use of ICT – A Reminder
Cybersafety is an important issue for all students. By the time students reach Middle and Senior years, most will already be regular and active users of digital technologies. Unfortunately, this also includes social media. There are many benefits to social media, especially around connectedness, however, we get reminded time and time again that our young people are not cognitively or emotionally intelligent enough to deal with the pressures of an online life and the negativity that lurks online. Many adults struggle in this space, so we cannot expect that our young people have well refined coping skills as if somehow by magic. It is important that students remain safe whilst navigating in the digital space. As they say, prevention is better than cure.
Below are some reminders of the Responsible Use of ICT agreement that student sand families sign prior to commencing in the one-to-one laptop program at the College. This is not just a list of random ‘do-nots’. The intent of this document is to outline the expectations of students using College owned devices, but also to help create safe online habits that students can take forth with them long after they leave the College. Please talk to your child about the table below, after all, it is what families and students have agreed to. It can also be found in full in the student diary form page 31 to 33.

The Year 6 classes recently joined with the Origin Energy Foundation to participate in the Solar Buddies project for 2023. Volunteers from Origin Energy came to our classrooms to inform us about energy poverty and the impact it has on remote and impoverished communities around the world. Each student constructed a solar light and wrote the recipient a letter to accompany it. These lights will then be sent to children in villages in Papua New Guinea. The solar lights will give the children a chance to study and do their homework after sunset. This project connected to our LYF and Science lessons.

This week the Year 7 Science classes investigated another separation technique. They used chromatography to discover who wrote the extortion note. They were given three suspects and three different black pens. A chromatogram sample was prepared and given to them to compare against their test. The students used chromatography to separate the inks in the three black pens and compare them to the sample. This helped them to confirm which suspect wrote the extortion note.

Prep and Year 1 students recently celebrated Albinism Awareness Day in support of their classmates Emerson and Lachlan, who both have Albinism. People with albinism do not produce the melanin pigment responsible for the colour of eyes, skin and hair. They also have vision difficulties. Their classmates added to their uniform for the day with rainbow coloured accessories. The rainbow coloured theme was chosen to represent the colour’s of Emerson’s cane. Thanks to Mrs Dellit for capturing lots of great photos from the day!
In very exciting news, a lot of Year 3 and 4 students have recently signed up to receive a leadership passport. This new leadership development opportunity has recently begun here at OLSCC. Any students from Year 3 and upward are eligible to begin the journey and all begin at Level 1 regardless of age. Each level has a range of tasks and events that students engage in, with feedback provided for each task. These involve public speaking events, service events, attendance at nominated College events and ‘above and beyond tasks’. There are a variety of items that can fall into these categories, with a noticeable commitment required. An example of this would be that participation in the College choir can be recognised as a public speaking event, but requires that the student has participated consistently for 3 or more consecutive terms. Students can only register for a leadership passport or be signed off on tasks by meeting with one of the Assistant Principals.
Some suggestions of tasks that may count towards the leadership passport include:
Construction Pathways – Dalby Police Station – McNab Constructions.
Students from year 10 to 12, interested in a career in the construction industry attended a site visit on 31 May at the construction project located at the Dalby Police Station. This tour was organised by Jason Wright at Construction Skills Queensland and the staff at McNab Builders.
The Dalby Police Station is a $80 million project aimed at modernising the facility for some 65 police officers and support staff. This site visit was an excellent opportunity for our students to gain a firsthand insight into trades and jobs in the construction industry. The students were guided through the site by the project manager, Karl and site manager, Stuart. These two employees from McNab have experienced long and successful careers in the construction industry with Stuart starting his career as a carpenter before his management position within the company.
The students from OLSCC gained insights into careers ranging from steel fixers, concreters, plasterers, carpentry, workplace health and safety, electrical, plumbing, scaffolders, riggers, project management and engineering, to list a few. With the impending Brisbane Olympics in 2032 and the predicted increase in population growth in Southeast Queensland, a career in construction is a viable option for our students with many trades already experiencing shortages in many regions in Queensland.

Congratulations to the QISSN Netball Team who completed their preparation for the upcoming carnival in the Brisbane with a trial game in the MPC against St Joseph’s College from Toowoomba last week. In a tight game St Joseph’s won 38-33.

QLD Representative
Brock Sankey and Dan O’Callaghan were members of the Darling Downs 18 Boys Touch Football Team who won the State Championships at Southport last weekend. The fourth time DD has one the Carnival since it started in 1985 and the first win since 2012. Brock Sankey was named in the QLD U18 Team for the National Championships in September and was awarded Players Player for the Darling Downs Team.

In the first week of the holidays 21 boys and 12 girls from the College will attend the Confraternity Shield Rugby League and QISSN Netball Carnival in Brisbane. We also have Yolande Gordon, Claire Harth and Karlie Falvey playing Rugby League with the St Joseph’s College’s Girls Team from Toowoomba. A list of our fabulous sponsors is attached to the newsletter. All Rugby League Games will be livestreamed. The netball team has one game on the show court which will be livestreamed. Updates and links will be posted on the College’s Facebook account during the week.

The Under 5 to Under 11 Inter House Athletics Carnival will be held next Wednesday 21 June. The Under 12-18 Carnival will be held on Thursday and Friday 22/23 June. The timetable for both days is attached to the newsletter. Students are able to wear house colours on all days they are competing. Programs will be uploaded to Parent Portal next week. All Relays, and Gift races will be run on Thursday 31 August.
Catholic Schools Athletics Carnival
The Catholic Primary Schools Athletics Carnival will be on Friday 14 July at the O’Quinn Street Oval in Toowoomba. This will be for students in Years 3-6 only. The College Coach will transport students to the event. Students who have been selected to attend will be notified by the end of term.
