On Wednesday evening, the annual Toowoomba Catholic Schools Excellence Dinner was hosted at Preston Peak Winery by our Executive Director, Dr Pat Coughlan.  These awards recognise members of the TCS community who create exemplary places of learning where every student experiences academic success and comes to know and experience the loving presence of Jesus.  This year we had finalists in three of the ten award categories, which is an amazing feat.  The night rapidly improved, as each of our finalists was announced as the winner of their category.  The winners received a certificate, an excellence award pin, and a cash prize.

Class Lists and Subject Selections for 2023

2023 Classlists for Prep – Year 12 will be released Monday 7 November 2022. As always, the class lists will be physically displayed throughout the College on Monday afternoon so that students can see their classes and teachers for the 2023 academic year.  It is also a timely reminder that at OLSCC we do not change class lists once they are developed.  These are the final class lists for 2023, with changes only occurring due to incoming students.

Parents of students in 2023 Year 7-12 should keep an eye on their email as subject selection information and confirmation is distributed over these last few weeks. As always in small high schools, subject offerings depend on the volume of students selecting subjects, so changes may occur over time.    

Staffing Changes for 2023

We love all our staff members at OLSCC, though it is that time of the year where I announce staff that won’t be with us in 2023 and welcome new staff to the community.  I am rather pleased with our trajectory with staffing for 2023, with only a few teaching and non-teaching positions outstanding. Mrs Brennan is excitedly drafting the 2023 timetable, and although always a challenge, is confident of delivering a great timetable for all students and staff at the College.

Outgoing Staff Members:

Miss Harriet Nicholson is relocating to the Gold Coast after 2 years making excellent contributions to the Cultural department and Senior Years groups in particular. 

Mr Kris Kingston is completing his contract after a big first year of teaching at OLSCC and pursuing other opportunities. 

Miss Emily Comin is finally able to travel overseas after having her travel plans ruined by COVID for a few years.  We wish her all the best as she sets off to explore the world!

Staff taking leave 2023:

Mrs Andrea Gormley is taking 12 months leave to rest and refresh – and well rewarded after her big win this week at the Excellence Awards!

Mrs Rebecca Martin is taking 12 months away from the College to focus on family, though will still be helping out with a project between OLSCC and Australian Catholic University.

Mrs Libby Baxter is having 12 months of leave after her many years of dedication to OLSCC and the building of the Careers department in recent years.

We wish all of our outgoing staff and staff taking leave all the best and sincerely thank them for everything they have done for our community!

Incoming Staff 2023

I am very excited to announce the amazing new staff we have recruited for 2023! We have managed to recruit some excellent applicants and I am greatly looking forward to working with the new staff as they integrate into our community.  We welcome:

Mrs Danielle Skerman – Learning Support Teacher (4 days per week). 

Danielle comes to us with a wealth of experience from the state system.  She has many skills and fortes from instrumental music to AUSLAN, and leadership development.  Her distinct skill set will be of great benefit to our College for many years to come.  Danielle’s 2 children, Audrey and Xavier, will also join her at OLSCC.

Miss Sophie Twidale – Year 3 Teacher. 

Sophie has been teaching at St John’s School in Roma in Years 5 and 3 for the past 2 years.  Her principals are sad to see her go, though we are very happy to welcome her on relocation as she transitions to Dalby.  Miss Twidale will be one of 2 new teachers in Year 3 who will bring bright new ideas to the Early Years as well as be supported by the experienced teachers.

Miss Abby Henry – Prep Teacher. 

Abby was identified as an outstanding candidate through the Toowoomba Catholic Schools graduate recruitment program and is very excited about joining our Prep team in 2023.  She has a passion for early primary education and has received excellent reports from her previous mentors.  Miss Henry will be joining us for the Prep transition events so our newest students will get to know her before classes begin next year.

Miss Amie Stolz – Senior and Middle Years Music and Instrumental Music

Amie is a highly skilled musician specialising in viola, violin and cello from the Queensland Conservatorium.  Miss Stolz has been teaching as a music and instrumental teacher across independent, Catholic and state schools in the metropolitan area and is greatly looking forward to her move to Dalby to settle into her new role.

Mrs Kristen Bennie – Middle Leader Student Services

Kristen has been an expert teacher at OLSCC for many years and will now transition into leading Student Services to support the learning of all students at OLSCC.  Mrs Bennie enjoyed her time replacing Mrs Walton earlier in the year and now looks forward to continuing the excellent work of our Student Services team!

Mr Dean Garside – Careers Development Practitioner / SY Teacher

Dean has been studying careers at university and is excited to enter this field of interest in 2023.  He brings a wealth of experience from the classroom, his study, and his various roles in industry and life prior to starting his teaching career.  Mr Garside is also well connected to the community and looks forward to continuing the progress of Careers at OLSCC.

Mrs Tracey Boland – Careers Support Officer

Most would be familiar with Tracey’s welcome in the front office for many years, though after completing her study in careers, she is now transitioning to a full-time role working as the Careers Support Officer.  This means she will be doing the vast majority of the administration and organisation of careers, school based apprenticeships, and various events. 

Ms Leah Parker – SY Design Technology, Food & Nutrition and Mathematics

Ms Parker was looking for a change of scenery from her previous College where she had worked for most of life, and very fortunately, we found her!  She has varied experience across leadership, pastoral and teaching initiatives and is very keen to begin her teaching at OLSCC, particularly working alongside Mrs Forbes.  I look forward to the impact Ms Parker will have in the Design Technologies spaces as we enhance this area of the College over coming years!

Well done to all students who are applying all of their knowledge and skills gained this year to complete their current assessment items.  This is a busy time for students and staff but a rewarding one when both groups get to see the progress and success of the year.

Once all assessments are submitted, teachers then have the fun job of marking and reporting these results for our end of year report cards.  These will be published for parents in the last week of Term 4.

NAPLAN

In 2023, NAPLAN has been moved to March rather than the traditional May test period.  We will again conduct NAPLAN Online with our students in Year 3, 5, 7 & 9 at this time.  NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum.  NAPLAN is not a test that children can prepare for in the same way they might prepare for an end of unit test. NAPLAN tests skills that develop and improve over time. These are skills that should be continuously developed throughout the year and not just in the lead-up to NAPLAN.

Keyboard skills are critical for NAPLAN online writing assessment. I encourage families to allow students time to type up stories/work on the computer.  Spend time with your child editing their work on the screen.  Discuss this process with your child and articulate your thinking.  Encourage the use of Write That Essay (WTE) with your students.  Classroom teachers work on digital literacy with our students which assist in their preparation for NAPLAN.

2023 Preparations – subject choices, class lists, Up Day and so much more….

In preparation for 2023 we continue to work with students, staff and parents to ensure smooth transition for all students into their new year level.  Part of this transition is what we phrase as “Up Day”, where students get to move up into their new class and experience what it will be like in January when they return to school.  It is important that as parents we talk positively about the move into the next year level to prepare our young people and reduce any nerves they may have.  Up Day is held on Wednesday 30 November. 

Students in Year 8, 9 and 10 have been working on their pathway understanding as they consider their subject choices for 2023.  It is important that students match their subject selection to their projected pathway to strive for success and goal attainment.  Pathways look different for each student and so does success, it is our goal that through the subject offerings in our Senior Years students will be ready to tackle the challenges and triumphs of the ‘real world’ after school.  Information regarding subject choices will be disseminated by Rodney Spain.

Class lists will be released to parents and students on Monday via the Parent Portal and displayed around the College for students to view.  2023 Prep class allocation will be sent via email to new families.  This is an exciting time for both staff and students as we look to the new year with anticipation.  It is important that at the beginning of the new school year families and class teachers establish strong communication links, this will ensure your child’s needs can be met.  We build our community through relationships we build as teachers with students and their families.  Parents play a significant role by being positive and encouraging to their children through this time of change and ‘newness’. 

So much forward planning goes into the functioning of our College each year and whilst at times it can be challenging it is rewarding to see our students thriving in their learning.  We often speak to our students about our learning dispositions as life skills and about the importance of being life long learners.  Term 4 is an exciting time in the College where, as a leadership team, we get to flex, develop and grow our own ability in these learning dispositions. 

Seating at College Events

This year is the first in the last few that we have no restrictions on seating allocation due to COVID.  Below outlines important seating information for Week 7 events:

COLLEGE AWARDS – A section of seating will be available for families and guests to join us at the College Award Ceremony on Wednesday 16 November at 9:15am in the MPC.  Parents of students receiving awards have been notified by email.  The seating in this section will not be assigned or allocated and we encourage families to arrive with plenty of time to find a seat. 

GRADUATION MASS – The Year 12 Graduation Mass will held at St Joseph’s Parish on Friday 18 November at 10:00am.  Year 11 students will attend with College Staff and will be seated in the choir loft.  Pews in the church will be left for family and guest seating.  No seats are assigned or reserved at this Mass and we encourage families to arrive with plenty of time to find a seat.  We have 42 graduates this year so it will be wonderful to fill the church to celebrate their graduation. 

College Christmas Carols

On Friday evening 25 November all families, extended families, and friends are invited to join us for a relaxing evening under the stars to celebrate the end of the year and the upcoming Christmas season, with the College Christmas Carols. Students in Prep – Year 6 will all perform a song with their class groups so please notify your child’s teacher if your family will not be there.  Other groups from Year 7-11 will also perform throughout the evening.  It begins at 6pm and concludes by 8pm. Families are encouraged to bring along some chairs or a picnic rug and snacks, to sit back, relax and sing along with our performers.  Some bench seating will be available around the oval.    Battery-powered candles will also be for sale for $2 each (cash only).  A cash bar will be running on the evening with funds raised going to Yes Arusha.  All monies raised at this event support the Year 8 support of Yes Arusha and we encourage you to bring along some spare change to pop in our donation boxes. So, dress in your fabulous Christmas outfits and come along and enjoy catching up with our community.

Genuine prayer is rooted in the belief that God is with us – God is on our side – that we have a gentle and gracious God who is passionately in love with us. In prayer, within this Catholic Christian tradition, believers open themselves and unite themselves to a love which is the source of all reality and learn to share that love with others.

Come Holy Spirit,

fill the hearts of your faithful

and kindle in them the fire of your love.

Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created;

and you will renew the face of the Earth.

Over the last two weeks our Year 10 students have engaged in their subject selections. Last Thursday, Year 10 students and their parents were invited to discuss what subjects are with the Senior Years staff which lead to some wonderful conversations.

Subject selections are well underway with current selections indicating students are making really informed decisions. Students are continuing to be encouraged to choose subjects that they are willing to work hard in, that they have success in and are able to demonstrate our learning dispositions.

These subject selections close 9am on this Monday 7 November.

We have reached the end of our second week of external assessment for our Year 12 cohort. Students have been engaging very well in both the tutorials being offered by our Senior Years teachers and the exams being undertaken. We look forward to celebrating their successes in a couple of weeks time.

This week our College was fortunate enough to have Mr Glen Gerreyn, the founder of the Hopeful Institute, work with our Year 11 students. Students focused on developing as leaders of our sector, while making strong contributions to our community. The message of positive decision making and holding oneself accountable to overcoming challenges and focusing on success was an important growth mindset to expose our students to. We hope to have Glen return to our College early next year to work with our other year levels.

Next week, as we continue to develop our Year 11’s into successful Senior school learners, the Toowoomba Catholic Schools have arranged a study skills day for all Toowoomba Catholic School’s Year 11 students. It is great to be able to witness the growth in these students as they continue to set themselves up for success.

Our Middle Years students always represent the College well and we are very proud of all their achievements. In the last week, we have had many successes to celebrate. Below are just a few:

QAMT Maths Competition

Three of our students recently competed in the state finals of the QAMT Maths competition – Emma Cusack (8), Jack Gibson (8), and Zane Stirling (7). The students performed to the best of their ability against colleges much large than oursl , including, Brisbane Boys College, St Joseph’s College Nudgee, Anglican Church Grammar School, Rockhampton Grammar School, and Brisbane Grammar School. Well done for competing against students from these large colleges.

Chelsey Cave – Winner of the Create Your Headspace Youth Street Art competition

Chelsea (Yr 7) recently entered (and was awarded as one of the winners) the Create Your Headspace competition, which is funded by the Queensland Government’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Package. The competition challenged young people to think creatively and then produce an art design that reflected on the theme ‘How are public arts and culture important to your mental wellbeing?’.

Councillor Kaye Maguire, Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development, stated ‘We could not have been more in awe of the well thought out and creative submissions we received. It was tough, but the winning entries are simply incredible.’

Well done Chelsea who was one of only three winners from our region.

Kobi Durham – Winner at the Nationals

Kobi (Yr 7) recently competed in the Queensland state titles for archery in the Cub division (U12) and was awarded the winner at this competition. Last weekend, Kobi then represented at the national titles and was once again successful in the Cubs division for his style of bow - the traditional recurve bow.

Kobi went on to be awarded the overall winner for points scoring in the Cubs division for the entire competition. Kobi’s success did not end there. After the archery competitions, he participated in a tomahawk throwing activity and was once again crowned the winner. This is an amazing effort considering Kobi only began his archery journey 10 months ago.

Booklists are also being finalised, and I once again urge you to purchase EXACTLY what is on the list, including brands and item numbers, as these have been found to be the most cost effective, long term learning tools for classroom use. Purchasing the correct items initially will also save you any extra expense of having to replace inappropriate items. The advice given to us by our local suppliers is that prices for these regular classroom tools drop significantly once wholesalers begin the ‘Back to School’ rollout. This generally begins 1 December, so it would be wise to wait until after this date to complete your purchase.

Uniform reminder: As I know many of you are looking at updating uniforms in preparation for 2023, please remember the following shoe guidelines:.

Formal Uniform Yrs 1-4: Black LEATHER or LEATHER LOOK joggers or LEATHER lace up dress shoes (including ‘Mary-Jane’ style shoes for girls). Currently, some students are wearing black mesh joggers with formal uniform. This does not meet the uniform guidelines. To avoid having to purchase additional sets of shoes next year, please ensure your formal shoe purchases for 2023 are LEATHER or LEATHER LOOK.

Prep uniform and Yrs 1-4 Sport uniform: Black joggers with black or white trim are still acceptable for 2023, however this will be as a transition period. From 2024, sport uniform shoes will be all black. If you are in any doubt how long you will get out of a pair of shoes for your child, I urge you to simply purchase all black joggers from now.

Our weekly playgroup with Mrs Horchner has been extremely popular since it’s return! Today, the children enjoyed a Teddy Bear’s Picnic outside in the beautiful weather, and they have an exciting Christmas themed morning coming up in a few weeks. Playgroup runs every Friday morning, 9:00-11:00am.

Congratulations to all students who competed at the QLD Junior Schools Cup Volleyball Competition at the Gold Coast. It was a great experience to send four teams to this event. Many early morning and after school training sessions have occurred in the past few months in preparation for this event. It couldn’t happen without the support of the parents who attended, our Year 9 coaching assistants and referees (Chloe Manteit, Chloe Wilkins, Taylor Marshall and Monique Smith) along with staff members Lisa Lincoln, Jackie Sullivan and Melinda Crow. Beach Schools Cup Volleyball

This Sunday and Monday, a Year 9 girls team will compete at the QLD Schools Cup Beach Volleyball Competition at Coolangatta. The girls have been very successful at Indoor Volleyball in past years, however this is the first time the College has entered a Beach Volleyball competition.

Return of Sporting Uniforms

As the end of the year is fast approaching, I am making an urgent request for the return of any sporting uniforms that may be still outstanding. Please return them ASAP. Replacement bills will be issued to students with uniforms not returned by Friday 25 November. This includes Touch Football shirts and singlets, Volleyball shirts, Rugby Sevens jerseys, Netball dresses and Athletics singlets.

Middle Leader Sport

Three of our Year 11 students have celebrated signing up for a school based traineeship or apprenticeship recently. Kurt Clarke has commenced a Certificate III in Light Vehicle Maintenance with Leeroy Bracken of Brackens Field Maintenance. Harry Cooper has commenced with Clayton Lowe of Lowes Building and Design to undertake a Certificate III in Carpentry while Jacob Utz has commenced his Certificate III in Engineering with Baker Rossow Consulting Engineers and is joined in this photo by Stephen Muhldorff. We congratulate these students on their commencement of VET and thank their employers for accepting them as trainees.

During Terms 3 and 4, Year 5 - 8 students have competed in the QAMT Maths competition. The first round was held at Chinchilla State High School during Term 3. We sent three Year 5/6 teams and three Year 7/8 teams to the competition. OLSCC won round 1 in both the 5/6 category and the 7/8 category. From there, the two winning teams competed online in round 2, which saw all the winners from the regional rounds compete against each other. The 7/8 team finished second and due to the first team pulling out, advanced OLSCC to the State Final. The Year 7/8 team of Emma Cusack, Jack Gibson and Zane Stirling competed in the State Final against 16 other school from across the state. We competed against schools such as Queensland Academy of Maths, Science and Technology, Brisbane Boys College, Brisbane Grammar School, Sunshine Coast Grammar, Cathedral College and Rockhampton Grammar just to name a few. Whilst we didn't finish in the top 5, we still placed in the top 17 of the state. Well done to all involved. The teams were as follows:

Middle Years Teacher

Last Wednesday, our Agriculture students from Year 9 to 11 travelled to Downlands College in Toowoomba for Moo Baa Munch, an event hosted by AgForce School to Industry Partnership Program (SIPP). The event was a showcase of all things agriculture with representatives from many rural and regional organisations giving the students insight into a range of ag career opportunities. We split into two groups for the day and each group attended seven 30 minute sessions from a selection of presenters. Some of these included Bayer discussing pests and working in an insect laboratory, University of Queensland's Skills program, Cotton Australia, dairy farmers who were very interesting and gave out free flavoured milk, Mort and Co feedlots and Australian Country Choice. Many of the presenters had fun and interactive things for the students to do plus goodies to take home. This day provided a great opportunity for students to see a small snippet of a range of industries within agriculture in particular, opportunities for work experience and tertiary education.

Our school Fun Run is on Monday 28 November starting at 12:10pm. Parent’s, caregivers and siblings are welcome to run along side their student, in their class’s designated run time. Cohorts will be running together, one cohort at a time. For example, the Preps will be completing the colour run as a group without any other year levels. Students have the option to walk around the colour stations or obstacles if they do not feel comfortable completing the obstacle or getting sprayed with colour.

We have one final week of fundraising which ends on Friday 11November. Prizes will be open to order from 10 to 14 November. After 14 November, prizes will not be available to order. This is so there is sufficient time for the prizes to be delivered before the end of term.  Student’s can come to school in old white clothes. If they are getting the bus or don’t want to stay in wet clothes, they will need a spare change of clothes to change back into. There will be sprinklers on the day so it is likely that student’s will be getting wet.

Congratulations to Prep Blue who were the highest fundraising class nad were lucky to have a special crazy hair day today!

Our next challenge is that everyone with an online profile will go into the draw to colour bomb our Principal Pete Cuskelly!

For most of us, Christmas is a time of celebration with family and friends; the joy of exchanging gifts, making precious memories together and enjoying delicious Christmas treats to eat. However, for many Australians, including families and children living below the poverty line, Christmas can be a time when meeting their most basic needs, like putting food on the table or a place to call home, is a real struggle. 2022 has been a year like no other, with even more people needing support to bring joy back into their Christmas celebrations.

Each year, our College makes every effort to support St Vincent de Paul in their challenge to help the needy in our community. We are again inviting you to join them in making this Christmas, one filled with joy and happiness for families across Queensland. We invite you to donate goods which can be made into hampers. These could be items that are considered treats at Christmas or staples to fill a pantry.

To streamline your donations, we are asking each class to donate items in the following categories: 

Please send your donations into the College with your child by Wednesday 23 November. These donations will then be passed on to our local St Vincent de Paul Society at the College Christmas Carols on Friday 25 November.  

Through our support of the Vinnies Christmas Appeal, we can help lift the spirits of those in need by donating these much-needed items.

School Bus Enrolments for 2023 are now open.

The office will be open on Saturday, 19 November from 8am – 12noon for any parents/careers and grandparents that would like to come on down and enrol students for the school bus.
